Canary Islands Startup Revolutionises Construction with 3D Printing, Robotics, and AI

A groundbreaking shift in the construction industry is emerging from the Canary Islands, where the innovative startup Evolution Construction System (Evocons) has successfully “printed” its first building using cutting-edge 3D printing technology at the Arinaga Industrial Estate.

Founded just over two years ago, Evocons introduced a bold new vision: to transform the construction sector by replacing traditional methods with a state-of-the-art 3D printer. Since then, the company has made significant strides, continuously integrating advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) to refine its prototype. Evocons recently announced its move into the commercial phase, marking a significant milestone as they commenced the construction of a new building for the Arinaga Industrial Estate’s Conservation Entity (Ecoaga).

In the time since their public debut in July 2022, Evocons has secured five international patents for their EvoConstructor® technology, spanning China, India, Brazil, Europe, and the United States. This advanced system allows for precise control over every aspect of the building process. At its core is a robotic gantry, capable of transforming a 3D model loaded into its software into a physical structure with millimetre accuracy.

Daniel Lorenzo, CEO of Evocons, explained that their technology can complete 60% of a building’s construction tasks, offering significant improvements in efficiency. “It not only enhances efficiency but also promotes sustainability by reducing timelines, costs, and waste,” Lorenzo noted. He further highlighted the technology’s potential to democratise construction by making it accessible across various regions through their innovative “on-site factory” concept, which utilises local materials.

Currently, EvoConstructor® is being used to build a cultural and exhibition hall in the Arinaga Industrial Estate, which will include facilities such as changing rooms and a public restroom. The technology is versatile, capable of constructing both small-scale structures and large edifices, offering a degree of mobility and flexibility previously unseen in the market. Notably, Evocons has also developed the software that powers EvoConstructor®, ensuring seamless integration and functionality.

The introduction of this technology is set to revolutionise the construction process by reducing reliance on physical labour, potentially increasing gender equality in the industry. It also offers real-time data collection, minimising risks and ensuring adherence to project timelines.

As Evocons steps into the commercial arena, the Canary Islands are poised to become a leader in the future of construction, showcasing the power of innovation in transforming traditional industries.
